About the Haus der Universität

The  Haus der Universität (engl.: House of the University) is a Neo-Baroque villa, most likely built in 1828 by the then president of the City Council, Gabriel Friedrich von Frisching. In 1909, the villa was sold to Bernese surgeon and Nobel Prize winner Theodor Kocher, whose son gifted it to the Burgergemeinde Bern in 1941. Since 1986/87, the Burgergemeinde Bern offers the building to the University of Bern to be used for seminars, conferences and other academic events. The foundation “Haus der Universität Bern” is in charge of the use and upkeep of the building.
